You can’t market your way out of accountability. But you can start doing better.
Let’s be honest: most of what gets passed off as “eco-conscious branding” is just regular branding with a big old leaf slapped on it. Consumers today are savvier than that. In fact, consumers today are savvier than ever. They read labels. They Google company practices. They ask questions you might not want to (even know how to) answer. Which means the days of greenwashing are numbered. And quite frankly, good riddance.
But that doesn’t mean you need to toss your brand into the compost bin (not that it would decompose at this stage, anyway). It just means if you say you care about the planet, you’ve got to act like it. Below are three places to start that go beyond buzzwords and start moving your brand in an eco-friendly direction.
Stay Local, Buy Local
You’ve heard it a million times, but buying local really is better. Sourcing your materials or ingredients locally doesn’t just reduce your carbon footprint, it also keeps money circulating in your own backyard (or state at the very least).
From a brand point of view, it gives you authentic, non-generic stories to tell. You’re no longer just “another business doing their bit.” You’re tied to a real place, with real people, and real impact. That’s compelling. That’s trustworthy. That’s not something you can fake with a big old leaf on your packaging.
Keep It Circular (Economy Wise, That is)
We don’t need more stuff. We need smarter stuff. Circular economy thinking is all about making sure we do everything in our power to reduce emissions and prevent waste from entering landfill. Think “reuse, repair, refurbish, recycle” in action.
Got a product that can be refilled? Build a refill program. Can you take back used items and repurpose them? Make it a campaign. Offer repair services? Let the people know! Sustainability isn’t just about what you make, it’s about its lifespan after it’s sold. The longer a lifecycle you can design into your product or service, the more longevity your brand will have, too.
Find Ways to Offset Your Emissions
Offsetting isn’t a get-out-of-jail-free card, but it is a step in the right direction. This doesn’t mean planting one tree and calling it a reforestation initiative. It means understanding your business’s carbon footprint, owning the messy bits, and actively working to reduce and offset where you can.
Whether that’s funding renewable energy projects, supporting regenerative agriculture, or investing in verified carbon credits, show your audience exactly what you’re doing and why. People respect honesty over perfection. So show that you’re actively doing your part.
Ultimately, committing to reducing your carbon footprint makes your brand feel real. Tangible. Credible. In a world of big promises and bigger letdowns, brands that commit to actual, traceable impact will stand out.
